Local SEO for Plumbers: How to Get More Calls From Google Maps
Local SEO for Plumbers: How to Get More Calls From Google Maps
Short answer: Local SEO for plumbers is getting into the three plumbers Google shows on the map for “plumber near me” and “emergency plumber” in your area. Use “Plumber” as your primary category, build a website page for each service, list 24/7 only if you answer at 2 AM, and get reviews every week.

What local SEO for plumbers comes down to
When a pipe bursts, nobody scrolls. They search “plumber near me” or “emergency plumber” with the town name and call one of the three plumbers in the map. Local SEO for plumbing companies is about getting into those three spots for the jobs you want, in the area you can actually drive to.
I’ve done this work for plumbing companies, including a Tampa Bay plumbing company. Client names and numbers stay off this page until Bret clears a named example in writing.
1. Your category is plumber, not contractor
This is the mistake I see most.
“plumbers will have contractor, and and then they wonder why they’re not ranking.”

“If you’re a plumber, same thing, plumber, not contractor.”

“Plumber” goes first. Then add secondary categories for real services you offer, like drainage service or water heater installation. Look at the top three plumbers in your town and see what they use.
2. Say 24/7 only if you mean it
When I looked at an emergency plumbing search, the order was clear.
“The first criteria for for uh Tampa emergency plumber is that they offer 24hour emergency service and then reviews.”

If you run nights and weekends, say so on your profile, your hours and your website, and answer the phone. If you don’t, don’t claim it. Google checks hours against real behavior now, and a missed 2 AM call costs you the review too.
3. Build your website around your categories
“if you want to rank for residential plumber, you have to have a page on your website that’s that says that’s what you do.”
Bret Moleta, 7 Deadly SEO Mistakes When Hiring, at 8:28
I tell plumbers to set up the site the same way the profile is set up. Your main category is your home page message. Your secondary categories become your first service pages and menu links.
“category is plumber, it should say top-rated plumber in in St. Petersburg. Then your first link should say contractor cuz that’s your second GMB category.”

Then add pages for the jobs that pay best: drain cleaning, water heaters, repiping, leak detection. Each one names the service and the town.
4. Photos from real jobs
Take photos on the job: the truck, the crew in branded shirts, the before and after. Upload them to your Google Business Profile every week. Real photos show Google and customers that you’re a working company in that area.
5. Ask every customer for a review
Send the same short text after every job. Don’t offer anything for it and don’t pick only the happy customers. The plumbers who win the map usually get new reviews every week.
Where Local Services Ads fit
If you have a budget for ads, Local Services Ads sit above the map for searches like “plumber near me,” and you pay per lead instead of per click. They work best when your profile and reviews are already in shape. See our Google Ads page for how we handle them.

Questions we get
Should my plumbing company use the contractor category?
Not as your primary category. Use Plumber first, then add secondary categories for services you really offer.
Do Local Services Ads replace local SEO?
No. They sit above the map and charge per lead. They work best when your profile and reviews are already strong.
How often should I post photos?
Every week if you can, from real jobs.
Is SEO for plumbers the same as local SEO for plumbers?
Yes for what we mean here. Both point at Maps and local search for plumbing jobs in your service area, not national blog rankings.
Do you need a website redesign to do local SEO for plumbers?
Not always. You need real service pages that match your categories. If the site cannot support that, we quote a rebuild. Tampa Bay website builds start at $5,000.
