Short answer: If you want plumbing calls from Google Maps, your primary Google Business Profile category should be Plumber, not Contractor. Contractor is a secondary category at best. Then build website pages that match the services you list.

This is the mistake I see most when I look at plumbing profiles. The company does plumbing work all day, but the primary category on Google Business Profile is set to Contractor. Then the owner wonders why “plumber near me” never brings the phone.

“plumbers will have contractor, and and then they wonder why they're not ranking.”

Set Plumber first

Your primary category carries more weight than almost anything else you control on the profile. “Plumber” goes first. Secondary categories should only cover work you actually do, such as drainage service or water heater installation. Look at the top three plumbers in your town before you change anything.

Match the website to the profile

“if you want to rank for residential plumber, you have to have a page on your website that's that says that's what you do.”

Your home page message should match the primary category. Your secondary categories become the first service pages and menu links. Then add pages for the jobs that pay: drain cleaning, water heaters, repiping, leak detection. Each page names the service and the town.

“category is plumber, it should say top-rated plumber in in St. Petersburg. Then your first link should say contractor cuz that's your second GMB category.”
